Enron - Anatomy of Greed

"The Unshredded Truth from an Enron Insider". Review by Sue Nelson.

Enron - Anatomy of Greed

Brian Cruver thought he was starting out on a glittering career at Enron, setting up a new business line and the world looking very rosy. However, reality slowly dawns - he can no longer ignore that he is part of a huge empire based on fragile foundations.

During his first few months at Enron, he finds himself in another world, believing its own propaganda and behaving like ‘big brother’. Employees became ‘Enronians’ and there was an atmosphere like Metropolis* about it – huge halls and escalators filled with employees making their way to their desks; constant reminders of how Enron is wonderful - messages on TV screens, films in the lifts, banners and emails from Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling.

It is quite astounding how an organisation such as this ‘got away with it’ for so long. Everyone WANTS to believe the success stories, and why not - the evidence is all around them – high share price and dominance in the market place. Banners announcing ‘From The World’s Leading Energy Company to The World’s Leading Company’ (no longer confining itself to energy alone!) are evidence of its ambition.

This book follows the decline and fall of this ‘empire’ and is an eye-opener to the corrupt world of a business that exists on make-believe, dishonesty, manipulation and huge ego. The self belief apparently held by Jeff Skilling that he is smart enough to ride this storm continues in the courtroom...as for Ken Lay...
